Monthly Meetings and Parent Education Programs
Parent Education Programs are provided at our monthly meetings, which are held from September through May.  Guest speakers provide programs on various topics, which are designed to educate and inform parents.  A question and answer forum is also offered as a part of the presentation.  The programs are held at the Dorothy Spainhour Center, 223 Hull Road, Fayetteville, NC at 6:30 pm. Support Groups
The Autism Society of Cumberland County offers several support groups for parents, caregivers, and family members.  Facilitated by volunteer parents, our support groups are informal and provide families an opportunity to share information, personal experiences and meet other parents.  Any parent, caregiver or professional of an individual with autism, no matter what age or level of functioning, is welcomed at any of the support groups.

Autism Breakfast Club (ABC) Support Group
This group consists of parents, caregivers and professionals of newly diagnosed and/or preschool and elementary age children with autism. (more info...)

Support Parents
Parents who are new to autism and are interested in making contact with another parent, with whom they can share personal experiences, may request a support parent through the Autism Society of Cumberland County.  Support parents do not provide professional advice, but offer families a confidential means by which to share information. Holiday Classroom Donations
A long-standing tradition, the Autism Society of Cumberland County donates funds to all of the self-contained autistic classrooms during the winter holiday season. These funds may be used at the discretion of the teachers for field trips, pizza parties, materials, etc.

Holiday Goody Bags
The Autism Society of Cumberland County distributes "goody bags" to all students in self-contained autistic classrooms during the winter holiday season. ASCC staff and volunteers prepare the bags and deliver them to the classrooms in early December.  These bags include soft candy, Resource Directories, ASCC brochures, Partnership for Children of Cumberland County’s Family Focus Guides, and many other treats. For students who are not in self-contained autistic classrooms, bags are also available for pick up at the ASCC office. Call 826-9100 ext. 2266/2268 for more information.

Camp Sunshine Developmental Day Summer Program
Camp Sunshine is a six and a half (6 1/2) week summer developmental day program for individuals with ASD ages 3 to adult.  The program operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Established in 1996, the purposes of the program are to:  1) Eliminate the gap in services which take place during the summer months, 2) Prevent the loss of developmental skills by offering a continuum of educational, social, art, recreational, and life skill opportunities, with emphasis on behavior management, and 3) Serve thirty-five (35) to forty (40) children with ASD.

Conference Scholarships
The Autism Society of Cumberland County offers a limited number of parent conference scholarships annually for three conferences. Application forms are available in the ECHO newsletter during the month prior to the conference.  Parents may also contact the office at 826-9100 ext. 2266/2268.

These conferences include:
  • TEACCH – High Functioning Autism & Asperger Syndrome (March)
  • Autism Society of North Carolina – Annual Conference on Autism Spectrum Disorder (March or April)
  • TEACCH – Structure in the Home (September)

Teacher Grants
Mini-grants are provided annually to self-contained autistic classroom teachers who elect to submit grant requests.  Applicants may request up to $200 in funds.  Requests for the funds may include, but are not limited to: daily materials, materials for specific projects, computer software, or various types of equipment.  Materials and proposals must be specific to academic, behavioral, communication, and socialization projects/activities.  Physical educational materials may also be requisitioned.
